In addition to prevention of disease, we know that chronic conditions need attention. Please notify me of health concerns about your children. I will be happy to discuss care they may need at school, including medication administration and treatments they may need during the school day. We can also discuss possible development of a personal health care plan for the school day and while your children are on field trips. (Nurses generally are not able to attend field trips). 

There are a number of health issues that can require emergency care. This includes, but is not limited to, seizures, diabetes, asthma, and life-threatening allergies. I urge you to provide the necessary emergency medication and documents needed for the care of your children if they have a condition that could become an emergency. 

Our faculty are trained in basic first aid, medication administration, and emergency care. Our staff complete the STOP THE BLEED program and are offered the opportunity to become CPR certified. Once an emergency plan is developed for a student, it is given to the staff that work with that child, including substitute teachers and bus drivers, as necessary.

Students with health conditions can learn more about how to care for themselves and be self-advocates. If you would like me to help teach your child about a health condition, please ask. When students come into the clinic, they are taught age appropriate basic first aid skills.

Throughout the course of the school year, a number of health screenings are performed per state law. Elementary school students receive vision and hearing screenings in Pre-K, KG, 1st, 3rd, and 5th, and anytime they move schools. Height and weight are generally checked every year. Girls' spinal screening is performed after the age of 10. Students also receive a screening exam for a condition that can indicate insulin resistance, called Acanthosis Nigricans. Staff and parents are free to request a screening if there is a question about whether vision or hearing may be affecting a child's learning.

Your children may get to meet an Atascocita High School health science student when they visit the school clinic. We are honored to have the opportunity to have these students include our campus in their clinical rotation. These students assist with basic first aid and data collection, such as checking temperatures  and students' weights. They are a pleasure to have on our campus.
