Dear Parents,
Welcome to Foster Elementary Kindergarten! We are so excited that your child will be joining us next year. This information sheet can be used as a guide as you register and prepare your child for kindergarten.
Registration Information
Kindergarten enrollment is currently open until May 27. It will reopen on June 15. The sooner you can register, the better! Please visit www.humbleisd.net to complete the New Student Registration Form online. The paperwork that you will need to complete registration is listed on the website and is also in our Kindergarten Round Up slideshow. We will also have registration information on our campus website: www.humbleisd.net/fe. Please be aware that all registered students must be in attendance on the first day of school, August 9, 2022 or they will be dropped from class rosters.
Kindergarten Quick Facts
- School doors open at 7:30 (please try to arrive as close to 7:30 as possible!)
- School begins at 7:55 a.m.
- Students are dismissed at 3:15 p.m.
We can’t wait to get to know you and your student. Kindergarten is an exciting time of growth and learning and we look forward to partnering with you in your student’s educational journey! Please see the back of this letter for more information on skills that will be helpful for your child when they begin kindergarten. Have a great summer and we will see you in August!

Information New Kindergarteners Should Know
Personal Information
- First and last name (say and recognize)
- Age, birthday
- Family members’ names
- Address & phone number
Personal Care
Children should be ready to take care of personal hygiene:
- Using the restroom, washing hands, etc. on their own
- Button, zip, and snap clothing and tie shoes
- Be responsible for personal belongings
- Know how to open snack and lunch packages
Social Skills
Children should be ready to:
- Take turns and share
- Stay in their seats when appropriate
- Keep hands to themselves
- Walk inside
- Use good manners in the classroom and cafeteria
- Show good sportsmanship – be a good winner and loser in all activities
Fine Motor
Children should be able to:
- Hold pencils and crayons correctly
- Write first name
- Hold and use scissors correctly
- Draw shapes – circle, square, triangle, rectangle
Ways to improve fine motor skills:
- Play with playdough
- Lace beads onto a string
- Pick up small objects with a clothespin or tweezers
- Work puzzles
Literacy Concepts
- Know the alphabet song, realizing that L, M, N, O, P are five different letters
- Recognize and name most capital and lowercase letters
- Connect letters to the sounds they make
- Know the difference between capital and lowercase letters and be able to match them
Math Concepts
- Count and recognize numbers 1 – 20
- Recognize basic shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, rhombus (diamond)
- Recognize and name colors
- Use a mouse (for a computer). You can practice this on the Kindergarten Computer Lab game on the Foster website.
